>> all right, george, thank you. you can stay updated on your ipad, your computer by going to wbaltv.com and click on alertings. more breaking news right now. fire crews battling a house fire in kingsville. >> we've been here about 20 maybe 25 minutes now. we have video to show you what it looks like. we're at blooms berry avenue when firefighters arrived at the location they noticed heavy fire in the rear of the lotion. they made an aggressive attack to get the fire under control. they were able to do so in a short amount of time. they have at least eight pieces of equipment here. blooms berg avenue is shut down. we don't have any injuries

reported as of yet. we are hearing word that this fire may be suspicious. as we get more on this we'll bring the details to you. >> the mother accused of murdering her 2-year-old son is out of the hospital. 32-year-old nicole fitzgerald is facing a long list of charges including attempted murder. bar is live with the details. >> police charged nicole fitzgerald shortly after she was released from the hospital. according to a court document fitzgerald admitted killing him the night before. when police arrived in the 1400 block in southeast baltimore they discovered a body of a 2-year-old boy. detectives soon determined a person of interest. >> when officers arrived they met with paramedics at the scene

who pronounced the 2-year-old baby boy dead at the scene. authorities have determined this is a homicide. the child's mother was taken sba custody as a person of interest. she did sustain stab woundeds to her upper body. >> fitzgerald is charged with first and second-degree murder she too has a cut to her throat. >> detectives served the warrant on 32-year-old nicole fitzgerald charging her in the murder of her son. >> the child paris russell was found in the basement of the home. when detectives asked fitzgerald about what happened she replied she killed her baby and cut herself. she also said she has taken some pills. >> investigators are trying to determine a motive. fitzgerald has another court appearance on january 8. barry simms, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the sheriff's office is trying to figure out what caused

a vehicle to veer you have a the road and down an enbankment this morning. it was breaking news at 11:00. along winters run road. crews had to free the 21-year-old male driver after the vehicle fell about 40 feet. the rescuers had to use a hook and ladder truck. it took about 45 minutes. no word on that man's condition. >> with homicides in baltimore over the 200 mark police are knocking on a lot of doors. they are trying to get known criminals you have a the street. jayne miller spent most of the morning with one of the police squad and she join us live with that story. >> police are trying to several things to respond to the spike

in shootings. every city officer must spend two days per week on foot control. and they are using two weeks to find people with a his history of violent crime. it may be the holiday season but city police aren't in much of a giving mood. their purpose for staying business like these is a stepped up effort to get people associated with vie lention you have a the street. he runs the effort. >> targeting violent offenders in the city, running backgrounds, we know they are wanted for violence. >> the two week warrant to serve outstanding warrants. homicides in baltimore fell below 200 last year but this year they have pasted that benchmark. as of this morning there has been over 200 homicides same

time last year there was 146. police like to strike during dawn while the victims are sleeping. 24-year-old robert was picked up three days ago on a warrant for armed robbery and gun violations. his record includes multiple arrests dating back to the age of 16. it was a frustrating morning for one squad they found people at home but not the offenders they were looking for. >> sometimes these guys, you know, they just disappear. we can't get much. >> about 300 charged offenders have been located during this two-week effort. as homicides have spiked late in the year in baltimore so have nonfatal shooting. the pace of violent crimes start to pick up in late summer.

standing by the speed camera program. the city is looking into a fourth camera. during a news conference the mayor told reporters that the era rate was less than 4%. it was on known eras and not a review of the system. >> we're putting things in place on checks and balances to figure out how the breakdowns happened. how we can reduce it to zero. >> the mayor put together a task force to review the speed and red light program. half of the group is city employees. the panel has the power to advise the mayor. we expect to hear the results in two weeks. >> in tonight's medical alert there is a new test that can

detect feal abnormalities. such as down syndrome, those women underwent the new test and the standard test. the new test detected abnormalities out of one in 60 pregnancies that was combiven a clean bill of health. that as you know, is an invasive test that can increase the risk for miscarriage. the new drug used for reducing breast cancer deaths could be more beneficial if taken twice as long. the study followed 7,000 women who finished the five year treatment. half of the group that continued on the medication had a lower reoccur rans rate and fewer died from cancer. that drug does have serious side effects but the benefits of

extending it seems to outweigh the risks. a colons of co-py is used to scrape for colon cancer. there might with be a simpler way. a new study shows a breath test to identify pashtsdzes with colon cancer about 75% accuracy. breath sampling is in the early phases of development but researchers believe these results are encouraging. >> the cold front made its way across the region overnight and we're starting to feel the impact of that front. the front has been bringing in cooler temperatures so what is outside right now has been the coolest it's been all day. there not much in the rain gages

as the front went through. a lot of what we see on here never made to the ground. it is moving away from the mid-atlantic allowing our skies to clear. we've had less than a quarter inch of rain over the last few weeks. not much rain around here since sandy blew through. most of november was quite dry. our total for the month, just a trace. we're at almost pvents 6 of an inch. the yearly total is almost five inches below normal for the year. high temperatures today occurred just before 1:00. between midnight and 1:00 we were on the warm side of that front and the 51 degree low is the current temperature for the day. it is getting chillier. temperatures are down into the low and mid 40's.

low 50's and you can kind of see the cold area coming in. 30's in oakland. 35 downtown. clear skies, northwest wind at 5 miles per hour and the sun went down a few minutes ago. 50's around here right now and it gets chillier as you head into cleveland. that is where the air is coming from. the core of the cold will pass far to our north as high pressure moves on by and on friday, the next warm front will actually be coming our way. this warm front is significant. look at the temperatures 68 in denver right now. it is going to be chilly for a couple of days, it is only for a couple of days. by the weekend we're talking warmer than normal tells. lots of sunshine, even with the sunny skies tomorrow it is going to be colder than normal.

then here's the showers developing on friday as the next warm front makes its way through the region. once we get through the next weather system showers kind of linger. temperatures will be above normal for the weekend but will is a risk of a shower popping up friday, saturday, and sunday as well. sunny tomorrow so get outside, it will be chell 42 to 47. sun rise on thursday morning at 7:12. winds will be light at the bay, bay water temperatures slide backward. high tide, only one just before noontime. out in western maryland the chill is coming in. no snow in the forecast, dry conditions and then rain showers as temperatures start to climb on friday and into the weekend. eastern shore locations a breezy day tomorrow. then 50 again with a sprinkle possible on friday. down to the coast look for sunny skies.

among teachers, students, and volunteers. they are helping third graders read well on their own by the time they start school next august. the effort starts now. they are asking for volunteers to step up and help students to develop the skills they need to become profirst in reading. tuters who work one on one on a personal level are known as reading angels. their impact can be life changing. >> he's taken home a book or returned a thoughtful book report since he started with the third grade read he has read at least 14 books. is that correct? >> yes. >> so far the city's recruited 90 people to become apart of the program if you're interested in becoming a reading angel head to our website, wbaltv.com.

state was spared 30 inches of snow still fell and areas around the crab capitol were destroyed by flooding. >> if you live in parts of maryland you are suffering as much as any community in this storm. >> both the governor and fema director have pledged to appeal the denial, has expressed outrage saying "i cannot remember a public policy decision that more deeply grieves me than the denial of individual assistance aid to families, homes, easy businesses. as one of maryland's poorest counties they need the help that these funds will provide." fema will still provide funds to the state that will help repair public structures such as roads.

joseph medical center because of a police-involved shooting. around 2:30 this afternoon a prisoner was receiving treatment when hospital personnel realized he was hiding a needle in his clothing. the two struggled and the officer's gun discharged in a wall. we can confirm that no one was hurt but no new mates at the e.r. an prisoner remains on the run at this hour. authorities tell us travis was last seen around 12:15 around cliffton park. the complex was impacted for a few hours because police were concerned that he would try to get in a school. he served nearly two years for robbery and burglary. anyone with information could call 911. >> a mother accused of murdering

her 2-year-old son is out of the hopts and in police custody. she is facing a long list of charges including murder. she fatally stabbed her toddler sunday afternoon. she also reportedly cut her own throat and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. police say she was released from the hospital last night and immediately arrested and charged. >> it can happen to anyone. that message about domestic violence was heard loud and clear today. >> the mother of murder la crosse player found herself in a position she never thought she would be in, advocate. she spoke at school today. after her daughter was beaten to death by boyfriend in 2010 she

>> breaking news out of prince george's county regarding the seat of tiffany alston. the former delegate has been removed from her office after entering a plea deal in october relating to misconduct in office charges. the office has determined that the county's committee has the right to withdraw the nomination of greg hall to replace tiffany. who makes the appointment asked to we draw hall's name after questions about drug and gun charges in hall's past. hall has blocked the committee from withdrawing his nomination. >> now to washington where president obama is warning republicans not to use the fiscal cliff as a borrowing limit. both sides seem to be digging in their heels with no move to

dropped them down across the great lakes, you can almost envision the cool air mass. snow showers pushing througherry pa. syracuse set a high of 70 yesterday and now they are in the 30's. so big changes in upstate new york. it has not been that dramatic here. the lowest temperatures of today are the current temperatures outside so it has been a slow fall as the cool air cross the lakes. it brushes a little farther south into the mid-atlantic area. you can see the cold now. 20's in the lakes, 30's throughout much of the northeast. it is going to be cold tonight. we'll see lows close to 25 degrees in is suburbs by morning. these temperatures will be adjusted. the low so far, 51. it will be cooler than that as we head towards midnight.

the high temperature was between midnight and 1:00 a.m. since the front coming through it has been getting cooler. a high was 75 degrees back in 2001. no 53 in georgetown. way down in southern maryland, 54. some freezing in garrett county. 35 in the harbor by morning tomorrow. with clear skies and the winds diminish. high pressure will be sprenten it is coming in as the cool air and the core moves towards northern new england at we'll have a couple of days where temperatures are chillier than normal. this warm front will pass us buy and the this mild side will return. so temperatures going up heading into the weekend. tomorrow with sunny skies our high will be in the 40's. on the bay it is averaging around 5 to 10 knots.

before the warm front brings a shower on friday and climbs temperatures into the 40's and maybe 50's as we head into the weekend. eastern shore 40's tomorrow then 60's are possible this weekend on the eastern shore again. down in ocean city a chilly 49 but up to 55 on friday. seven-day forecast a couple of days of normal december weather then it warms up. a thunderstorm possible as we climb into the 60's on monday. when that front goes by it will turn windy and cool again for tuesday and wednesday of next week. >> we begin tonight's consumer alert with the citigroup. the company is slashing 11,000 jobs worldwide. most of them coming from its consumer banking unit which handles branches and checking accounts. as for maryland one branch is

affected by the closing. we're told there is over 70 people being laid you have a statewide of the 36,000 employees. this is the first major move by the company's c.e.o. speaking of job cuts, one group fears they may have the same fate, social security workers. a number of employees and their supporters protested outside the social security administration downtown. their message no social security over the fiscal cliff. >> 28 days from today if nothing happens in congress, we're going to get hit here at social security with a 5.5% cut. >> social security advocates say that if congress does not come to an agreement there will be a layoff of 1,000 employees and employees that are kept on could see a 10% pay cut. a new report shows how strong an economic force is for the city
